Tasmania’s Energy Saver Loan Scheme (ESLS), which provided interest-free loans for energy efficiency upgrades, has now officially closed.

Originally launched in October 2022 and scheduled to run until October 2025, the program ended a month early on 1 September 2025 after its full allocation of funds was taken up due to strong demand.

What Was Tasmania's Energy Saver Loan Scheme?

The scheme offered interest-free loans of up to $10,000 for households, small businesses, and community organisations to invest in products such as:

  • Solar panels and battery storage

  • Insulation and double glazing for existing homes

  • Energy-efficient appliances and heating/cooling systems

  • Electric vehicle charging infrastructure

Over its lifespan, the scheme supported more than 7,500 loans, delivering $67 million worth of upgrades to homes and businesses across the state.

Why Did It Close Early?

The program was designed to make clean energy and efficiency improvements more accessible. However, with uptake far exceeding expectations, the allocated funding was exhausted ahead of schedule.

Tasmania’s Energy Minister confirmed the scheme had been “so well taken up” that it had to close early, with strong interest from both households and small businesses keen to cut their energy costs.

What Support Is Still Available?

Although the ESLS has now ended, Tasmanians still have access to two key forms of support:

  • Federal Solar Rebates (STCs): The Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) scheme provides an upfront discount on the installation of solar panels, reducing the initial cost for households.

  • Federal Battery Rebate: Announced in 2025, the new Household Battery Incentive helps cut the upfront cost of installing a home battery system, making solar storage more affordable than ever.

Together, these programs make solar and battery installations more financially accessible — and help Tasmanians take control of their energy bills.

The Bottom Line

The early closure of Tasmania’s Energy Saver Loan Scheme highlights the strong demand for affordable clean energy solutions in Tasmania. While state-level support has finished, federal rebates for both solar panels and batteries are still available and continue to deliver significant savings for households making the switch.
