Solar Battery Rebates in Australia
LAST UPDATED JULY 2025
This page covers the Australian Solar Battery Rebates for homes and businesses.
What Is the Australian Federal Solar Battery Rebate?
The Australian Federal Government has launched the Cheaper Home Batteries Program to reduce the cost of solar battery systems for homes and businesses.
Key Details:
Launch Date: 1 July 2025
Early Eligibility: Battery systems installed from 6 April 2025 still qualify, but they must not have been commissioned (switched on or tested) until 1 July 2025 or later.
Rebate Amount: Up to $372 per usable kilowatt-hour (kWh), capped at 50 kWh per property (batteries can be up to 100 kWh, but the rebate applies to the first 50 kWh only).
Typical Saving: Approximately 30% off the battery system cost.
Eligible Participants: Homeowners, small businesses, strata schemes, and community facilities.
Eligible Systems: New batteries or upgrades to existing systems (as long as the total capacity remains within the eligibility limits).
System Types: Both on-grid and off-grid battery systems are eligible.
VPP Readiness: On-grid batteries must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready, but VPP participation is optional.
Exclusions: Portable batteries and electric vehicles are not eligible.
This program is part of a $1 billion national investment aimed at improving grid stability and lowering electricity costs.
Who Can Get It?
To be eligible, you must:
Own the property (home or business)
Install a grid-connected battery system (or off-grid where permitted)
Use the battery to store renewable energy (e.g. solar)
Ensure the system and installer meet program requirements:
Battery and inverter must be Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved.
Installer must be accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA).
The system must be VPP-capable if grid-connected.
An electrical compliance certificate dated on or after 1 July 2025 is required.
Can I Combine the Federal Battery Rebate with a State Rebate?
Yes. In most cases, you can combine the federal battery rebate with state-based battery programs, giving you access to even greater savings depending on your location.
Who Is Running the Program?
The national battery rebate is delivered under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which also provides the existing STC solar rebate.

- Increased energy independence (if you have solar).
- Backup in the event of power blackouts (some battery systems)
- Helps stabilise the electricity grid
The installers we connect you with can help determine the best battery for you and if you’re eligible for any of the battery rebates available.
What Types of Battery Rebates are available in Australia?
Battery rebates can come in many forms, such as an upfront payment, an interest-free loan or virtual power plant (VPP) offer.
